My puppy got really long and sharp nail should i go to the vet or is it easy to cut them myself?

No dog nails are wierd you have to get a speciailist like a vet to do it or you could hurt it.My puppy got really long and sharp nail should i go to the vet or is it easy to cut them myself?
If you are not that expierenced in cutting a dogs nail i let the vet do it cause they know what they are doing and after all they are profesionnalllss. Depends on the dogs nail. White color ones are more easier to cut then the black ones. The black ones are alot tougher and requires much more patience and a more heavy duty clipper. Dont cut too much. Like a tiny bit will do casue some dogs have sensistive paws and if u cut to much it will hurt them.

To cut a dog's nail: Place the dog on a raised surface. Use a non-slip mat to avoid injury. If possible, have someone hold the dog while you cut its nails.

2

Step Two

Slide the nail trimmer over the nail. Stay in the white part of the nail; the pink part contains blood vessels; cutting too far back will cause bleeding.

3

Step Three

Squeeze the handle of the nail trimmer smoothly and firmly. Do not try to pry the nail off; when the trimmer is used properly, the nail pops off.

4

Step Four

File the edge of the nail. Or, you can let the nail be worn smooth by walking the dog on hard surfaces like sidewalks.

5

Step Five

If you cut the nail too far down, use a styptic pen or a powder to stop any bleeding. For dogs with black nails, cut the tips only where the nail is whitish.

Tips %26amp; Warnings

* Don't forget to trim the dog's dew claws as well. These nails grow further up on the dog's legs and do not make contact with the ground.

* Remember, trimming just a little is best. The nails should protrude just over the dog's pads. Do not cut them too short.

* Cut dog's nails regularly. Walking on overly long nails can lead to nail bed infections, broken nails and bleeding.

* There are different types of nail trimmers available for different breeds and sizes of dogs. Consult with your veterinarian or pet shop owner about the best type to use for your dog.

* Always cut nails from underneath, not from the tip downward. My puppy got really long and sharp nail should i go to the vet or is it easy to cut them myself?
It is easy to trim a dog's nails yourself BUT you need to know what you are doing... possibly it would be best to take the dog to the vet and have the vet show you how to properly trim them (actually it likely won't be the vet but someone who works for them).... or even a groomer could help teach you. I usually dremel instead of clip but either way is easy and it is important that you do it regularly with the puppy so that it gets used to it and you can keep the nails trimmed back. Once you have learned how to do it, do it every week or so and that will help...
If you know how to do it, then do it yourself. But if you don't know how to do it then have a vet show you first. You MUST KNOW exactly how to do it or you could injure the puppy. If you trim them to far up you will make the dog bleed. Best to take the puppy to the vet and have him show you first.
I cut my dogs nails. It's the easiest to do when their nails are lighter instead of a darker color. This should help,

Yes you can - but you have to be careful in doing so. You can buy some good nail clippers in larger pet shops and they have instructions on how do clip the claws on the back. I did my dog's and I would strongly advise you to clip them outside as if you clip the quick by mistake (which we did) they will bleed for a few minutes before the clotting factor kicks in. Cutting the claws does not hurt the dog.
GO TO THE VET,IF YOUR UNSURE OR SHAKEY,YOU COULD HURT HIM BAD.VETS S/TIMES DO IT FREE
please please have it done by someone who knows what they are doing. imagine someone cutting your nails wrongly and cutting to the nerve just to savea few pounds , go to the vet
Go to the vet and watch how he clips the puppies nails, than you can go to a pet shop and buy a pair of special nail clippers . It is very dangerous to clip the nails too short ,it can cause an infection !

Be careful !
u can get these dog nail clippers at pet shops -

that may be easier than going to the vet every time your dog grows long nails!!
I just cut my dogs nail for the first time. I figured it was cheaper to buy a pair of $5 clippers than to spend $20 every other month. I was SOOOO scared to do it, but luckily she has some clear nails as well as some black nails. The clear nails make it easier to see the quick, which is pink compared to the rest of the nails. You do NOT want to cut the quick, as it will cause bleeding. If your dog has all black nails, you may want to watch the trimming done by a professional first. It is best to cut nails after bathing the dog for the same reason it is better to cut your own nails after a shower, they are softer and easier to cut. It is good to cut a small amount at first, you can always cut more later if needed. there are some dogs that can not handle having their paws manipulated at all, in these extreme cases they must be sedated by a vet, which is not recommended unless absolutely necessary. Good luck to you!
I think you should take him to the vet. It's always safer
I haven't cut my dog's nails since I cut its finger accidently^^and I realized It's so difficult to find a dividing line between nail and pad, Because Both of them are usually black colour.

So i suggest u go to the vet
If you have never cut a dog's nails, have a vet or groomer show you before you even attempt it. There is a vein called the quick that is in the nail, if you cut it, it is painful for the dog and you have to have styptic on hand to stop the bleeding.
GO TO THE VETS TO SEE HOW ITS DONE AND THEN ASK THE VET WHAT TYPE OF CLIPPERS SHE RECOMENDS AND THEN TRY THEM ON UR PUPPY
Get the vet to do it the first time to show you how, having said that, I have only ever used a nail clipper in 30 years, I file my dogs down with a diamond dog nail file, and they get plenty of roadwork which wears them down, other than the dew claw which I file monthly.
We cut our dogs nails ourselves. Look closely at the nail and you should see a kind of white root inside about half the Length of your dogs nails. As long as when you cut them you DO NOT cut the root your dog won't feel a thing. If your dog is obedient make them lay down. It's much easier. You can cut them with large toe nail cutters, Skin nippers or as everyone else said go to a pet shop and buy the professional ones. If you don't like the sound of cutting your dog nails go to a groomer. I'm Sure they might be able to cut them there and then for a low price.
I cut my dogs nails, if you feel comfortable doing it yourself go ahead.
you need to know what your doing, theres a nerve in the nail as you call it, and you dont want to damage it, the vet or if theres some 1 whos done a grooming coarse n your area, they would be able to do it, ask them how you find the area where the nerve ends, then you will will be able to do it your self in future.
If you're nervous to do it yourself, then take it to the groomers, but trimming your dog's nails is a relatively easy process.

Here's how:

1.You need to make sure that your dog is calm and is in a state where it doesn't mind having its paws being touched and dealt with.

2. Then, with a dog toenail clipper, clip the tip of each nail. This is the tricky part. If your dog has white nails, it's easy to detect the quick which is the part that contains the blood. It's pink. You need to be sure that you don't cut into the quick because it will bleed.

If your dog has black nails, then you need to be more careful.

3. IF your dog bleeds, you can use some flour to stop the bleeding. Just dab a small amount on the bleeding nail and move on.
i recommend you go to the vet so they can show you how to do it correctly then you could do it yourself.
I would think if you walked your puppy every day on the pavement this it's self should wear the nails down, I have had three dogs in the past and never had to cut there nails, only when the dog gets old and unable to walk far should you require to cut their nails and only with the proper tool, and after some instruction. But I wish you and your puppy well.
Hi there

That depends entirely on how comfortable you are with cutting your puppies nails. You can do it at home with nailclippers made to clip dogs nails. You may find though that if your puppies nails are black that it is really hard to gauge where the quick is. If they are white you can usually see where the red blood vessel ends and this makes it a bit easier to cut the nail below that. Make sure if you do want to cut your puppies nails yourself (and even if you want the vet to do it) that he gets used to letting his feet be handled. Handle them regularly and that way when you have to get his nails cut he won't mind them being touched so much. If you are worried, get the vet or vet nurse to show you how to do it properly the first time. You may find that he's a bit wriggly at the moment and you may need to have someone hold him for you ;-)

Cheers
its easy. do it yourself.

just find the quick [pink] and just cut the white.
You can cut the nails yourself but if you have never done it before then I would have a vet teach you for the first time. This way you know what your doing. I say this because if you cut too far down into the quick then your dogs nail can get infected easily and cause more problems. You can also take your dog to a groomer and have them show you how to cut the nails for future time. Im sure that either one would be happy to show you how to do it and the groomer may offer to just cut the nails and show you for less of a charge than the vet will.
